Cold War (15)

In Polish with English subtitles

Monday 8 October at 7.45pm
Tuesday 9 October at 7.45pm
Wednesday 10 October at 1.30pm & 7.45pm

Running time – 98 minutes

Set against the backdrop of the 1950s Cold War in Poland, two people of differing backgrounds and temperaments begin an almost impossible romance.

Cold War, Pawel Pawlikowski's latest film, is bittersweet and unbearably lovely, a sad ballad of two lovers who can't stand to stay apart but also sometimes can't stand each other either. Achingly romantic but also wryly realistic about the destructive power of eros, the drama spans a decade and a bit from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. It tracks the tempestuous relationship between pianist Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) and singer-dancer Zula (Joanna Kulig), two Poles who shuttle back and forth across the Iron Curtain, from Warsaw to Paris and beyond as their passion plays out over many years.

TWISTED TALES

Thursday 11 October at 7.45pm

Tickets - £13, concessions - £11

Twisted Tales is a hilariously dark triple bill of riotous comedies that reveal the darkness under the domestic, the lengths people will go to for love and how to wash blood stains out of a carpet.

WHY HAVE three strangers; a brash Bristolian, a Cockney wide-boy & an introverted blogger been summoned to play a deadly locked-room mystery?

WHO IS the bandaged man, obsessively in love and held captive inside an upmarket flat, counting down the seconds until it’s time for her to return and “thing I can’t say” to begin.

HOW WILL two children’s TV presenters dispose of a corpse before time runs out? All they have is their wits, their arts and crafts skills and a foul-mouthed, criminal genius glove puppet.

Join us for an anarchic night of Twisted Tales and consider “how far would you go to get what you want?”

Theatr na nÓg

Aneurin Bevan and Jennie Lee were comrades and flatmates who together fought and preached for socialism as they saw it; he the Tredegar firebrand on the Labour back benches, she the miner’s daughter from Fife who became a Socialist MP before she was old enough to vote.

Then they were married; he deeply in love with her; she on the rebound from a tragic love affair. Both of them were loved and loathed by their fellow MP’s; he the Bollinger Bolshevik; she his Lady Macbeth, the dark angel at his shoulder. Life together unfolded through the desolate war years, the trials of founding the NHS, and the vicious internal feuds of the 1950’s. But as it did so their love deepened and matured.

This is the story of a partnership that became one of the outstanding political marriages of the twentieth century.

AN EVENING WITH MICHAEL GRAY: Bob Dylan, Literature & The Poetry Of The Blues

Tuesday 30 October at 7.45pm

Tickets - £13

A stylish, witty talk, with audio tracks and rare footage, from the author of Song & Dance Man III and The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia, definitive studies of Dylan’s work. Michael explores the Minnesota Bard's interaction with literature, and with the poetry of the blues.

His books may be immense but there’s nothing dry about Michael’s talks. He has appeared at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and at Dylan Conferences at Minnesota, Vienna and Bristol Universities. His Canterbury Arts Festival event was the best-attended that year; at the New School, NYC, the room was overflowing for his talk, as were the halls in Galway, Ireland, and the University of Texas.

Michael Gray’s events are lively, spontaneous and acute, giving a thoroughly entertaining, fresh account of Dylan’s achievement.

SUN RECORDS: Where Rock'n'Roll Was Born - the Official Sun Records Concert Show

The legendary record label that brought you Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Rufus Thomas and scores more rockin' pioneers, comes to life, live on stage.

Re-visit the blessed recording studio where the distinctive sound we know and love today was crafted from gospel, blues, hill billy, country, boogie and western swing by musical visionary Sam Phillips.

His trailblazing Memphis studio brought us That's Alright Mama, Great Balls of Fire, I Walk the Line, Whole Lotta Shakin', Bear Cat, Blue Suede Shoes, Good Rockin’ Tonight. . . hundreds of hits that would influence the world of music for generations to come.

Sam Phillips was a patient, honest man and a perpetual optimist. In 1954 he combined a modest 19-year-old Elvis Presley with musicians Scotty Moore, Bill Black and then DJ Fontana to create music that infused country and r'n'b.

It transcended musical and racial barriers. The ‘Sun Sound’ was born.

Rehearsed in an exact replica of the Sun Studios, featuring the musical instruments of the era, starring a multi-talented cast of singers and a supporting cast of amazing musicians, the sound of Sun is brought to life live on stage in the official concert show that takes you back to the birth place of rock'n'roll.

‘Don’t be afraid of that floor, hammer it!’

On the eve of the Irish Open championship, we meet Annie, a 16 year old Dubliner, as she charts us through the various successes and disappointments of her Irish Dancing life. We share her mind numbing commitment and burning desire to win the Irish Open title. Will she win and, if so, in what way?

From the confines of every parochial hall in Ireland, Irish Dancing champions are churned out at a massive rate. Medals and cups build up in drawing rooms and Riverdance swells a national pride, but the public aren’t privy to the blood, sweat and tears that pave the way to the first place podium.

The Humours Of Bandon is a coming of age story, full of heart, humour and wisdom, for anyone who had a childhood passion that threatened to overwhelm their life.

Developed as part of Show in a Bag an artist development initiative of Tiger Dublin Fringe, Fishamble: The New Play Company and Irish Theatre Institute to resource theatre makers and actors.

COMEDY CLUB 4 KIDS 2019 (Ages 6+)

Saturday 16 February at 2pm

Tickets - £8, family of four - £28 (this offer will apply automatically in your basket)

The Comedy Club 4 Kids gets the best stand-ups and sketch acts from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and their families… but without the rude bits!

The show is family friendly, but without any patronising idiocy. In fact, it's just like a normal comedy club, but it's on in the day, kids are allowed in, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of the entire audience claiming to be called Bob.

"A highlight for children in recent years, giving them a taste of some of the biggest names in comedy... with the fun, rowdy feel of a real comedy club" – The Guardian

"Absolutely hilarious." - The Yorkshire Times

"The perfect way to entertain the whole family." -Three Weeks
